Mary Behrens is a native of Montreal, Quebec. She moved to the USA in 1981 and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Massachusetts (Boston) with a BA in Art History in 1988. Mary received her MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College in 1994. 

Behrens has been the recipient of artist residencies at MacDowell Colony, Yaddo and was a fellow at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts for seven months.  Her work has been reviewed in many publications including The Boston GlobeArt New EnglandThe Boston Herald and was included in an essay on Boston art in Art in America. She was recently included in the exhibition Divergence: Five New England Artists at the Reynolds Ryan Gallery in New Orleans, 2013.

Behrens is currently a visiting guest artist at the Ottawa School of Art in Ottawa, Canada. She was an Assistant Professor in Painting and Foundations Art at Montserrat College in Beverly, Massachusetts from 1997-2005.  She has been a visiting lecturer at many schools, including the Rhode Island School of Design,  Suffolk University (Boston), Vermont College, University of Massachusetts at Boston.
In addition to her art practice, Mary was an editor for ArtsMedia magazine between 1996-1999.  She has published numerous essays and art reviews for Art New England for which she was a regional editor 2002-2004. 

She lives in York, Maine and in Ottawa, Ontario.
